MR-1
A gantry mill built for steel, with a big envelope and an epoxy-granite base — from the makers of CrossFire.
A big steel-cutting envelope for less than a Tormach — if you’ll put in the assembly hours.
The MR-1 is a bold idea: a gantry layout like a router, but built heavy enough — steel gantry, epoxy-granite base, 2.5 kW servo spindle — to cut steel and even titanium. The result is a far bigger envelope than a knee mill at a lower base price.
The base price isn’t the full story. You’ll add a control PC, likely an enclosure and coolant, and spend 18–25 hours assembling it. There’s only about two inches of clearance under the gantry, too. If you want big metal parts and enjoy building machines, it’s compelling.

What I like
- Built for steel — 2.5 kW servo spindle
- Large envelope for a metal machine
- Epoxy-granite base damps vibration
What I'd watch for
- 18–25 hours of assembly
- Options push the total past $6k
- Limited clearance under the gantry
